CHANDRAYAAN-3: INDIA'S UNFLINCHING JOURNEY TO THE MOON, REVISING THE CELESTIAL SYLLABUS?

By P Mohan Chandran

**Is the moon just a celestial body floating in the night sky, or is it a testament to the limitless human spirit, filled with infinite questions and boundless curiosity? What does it take to reach out to this silvery satellite, 384,400 kilometers away? As India gears up for its second attempt to land on the moon with Chandrayaan-3, these questions seem to resonate more deeply than ever.

The echoes of India's previous lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, still linger as ISRO readies Chandrayaan-3 for launch. While the former's lander and rover were unable to complete their mission, they left an indelible trail, marking India's unwavering dedication to space exploration and learning.

On July 5, 2023, Chandrayaan-3 took a significant leap towards the moon as the spacecraft was integrated with the LVM3 rocket body at Sriharikota. A beacon of Indian innovation, the 43.5-m tall three-stage rocket, earlier known as GSLV MkIII, stands as the country's most potent rocket, reinforcing India's stronghold in the global space race.

Unlike its predecessor, Chandrayaan-3 will embark on its lunar journey sans an orbiter, with its mission life encapsulated within a lunar day – equivalent to approximately 14 earthly days. The mission's sole focus rests on the lander and the rover, assigned with the Herculean task of executing a soft-landing on the lunar surface, finishing what Chandrayaan-2 had set out to accomplish.

The past is indeed a great teacher. Learning from Chandrayaan-2's unfortunate descent speed mishap, ISRO has now fortified Chandrayaan-3 with an array of new technologies. The spacecraft's lander module is equipped with four state-of-the-art instruments, and the rover has two of its own. As these exploratory devices descend upon the lunar surface, their mission transcends mere data collection; they carry with them the aspirations of an entire nation and the collective curiosity of mankind.

As we approach the launch date, an air of silent anticipation permeates the Indian landscape. The success of this mission is not simply about planting the tricolor on the lunar soil. It's a statement of intent, a testament to our resilience, and a declaration of our scientific prowess. It is about redefining the rules of the international space mission and setting a benchmark for other nations to follow.

As the countdown for Chandrayaan-3's launch begins, let's leave you with some thought-provoking questions. Does the success of a space mission lie solely in its successful landing, or does it resonate in the journey and the learnings it imparts? As we strive to conquer the moon, are we ready to address the challenges that come with this endeavor? Will the landing of Chandrayaan-3 carve out a new chapter in the annals of space exploration, or will it simply add to our growing understanding of the universe?

Finally, as we watch Chandrayaan-3 disappear into the night sky later this month, one question will surely resonate in the minds of all Indians: Are we witnessing a new dawn in India's space saga, a tale scripted by resilience and driven by ambition, leaving us a step closer to unraveling the mysteries of the moon? Only time will unravel this lunar lore.

Do you think India's Chandrayaan-3 mission will also be successful?

  • Yes, of late, India has been doing great in space technology

  • No, India needs the help of Russia or France.
