FATE VS DESTINY: THE COSMIC DANCE BETWEEN THE DIVINE SCRIPT & HUMAN WILL

By P Mohan Chandran

Are we merely puppets in the grand cosmic play, or do we possess the power to change the script? What is fate? What is destiny? And more importantly, what role do they play in the grand scheme of our existence?

To understand this cosmic dance, let's start by exploring what these two enigmatic entities are. Fate, they say, is the divinely ordained script of your life, as immutable as the course of a star. It's like the hand of cards you've been dealt at birth – it's set and cannot be changed. For instance, being born a woman or man is a matter of fate.

Destiny, on the other hand, is the unwritten script, the one that we pen with our choices, actions, and decisions. It's how you play the hand you've been dealt. You may be born a woman, but how you live your life, how you carve out your path, and what you make of your existence – that is your destiny.

Consider a conversation between a woman and a saint. The woman asked, "I was born a woman, it is my destiny. How can I change it?" The saint replied, "Being born a woman, that is your fate, but how you live your womanhood, that is your destiny."

A captivating illustration of this dance between fate and destiny is the life of APJ Abdul Kalam. He was fated to miss out on becoming an IAF pilot by a whisker, but his destiny led him to fortify India's defense as the Missile Man. His initial path was diverted by fate, but the direction he took afterwards was his destiny. His choices, resilience, and unwavering dedication shaped his destiny.

Likewise, Verghese Kurien, initially trained as a mechanical engineer, was thrown onto a different path by fate. However, he chose to leverage his circumstances and create an impressive destiny as the 'Father of the White Revolution' in India.

Both these great souls had their fate divert their paths, but it was their actions, their grit, and their determination that created their legendary destinies.

At times, no matter how hard we strive, we may fail to achieve our desired goal. We may feel that our efforts are in vain. But perhaps it's not the end of the world, perhaps it's just the Universe nudging us towards our true fate. When we embrace this change and adapt our choices, we pen a new destiny.

Thus, we dance in this cosmic ballet, twirling between fate and destiny. We find that while we can't change our fate, we have the power to shape our destiny. Our destiny is not a preordained path, but a trail we blaze with our choices and actions.

As we conclude, ponder upon this question: Are you merely accepting the cards dealt by fate or are you taking control and shaping your destiny? Fate is the given; destiny, the variable. The art of life lies in playing the hand of fate to create a destiny worth remembering. Are you playing your hand wisely? Are you dancing to the tune of destiny, or are you letting fate lead the dance?

Do you think you have the power to shape your own destiny?

  • Yes, definitely, my destiny is in my hands.

  • No, my destiny is pre-ordained & I cannot change it.
