THE EROSION OF HUMANITY: ARE WE NAVIGATING OUR OWN DOWNFALL?

By P Mohan Chandran

In a world teeming with life, have we become the architects of desolation? As we chase after material wealth, have we forsaken the wealth of the soul?

The trajectory of the human race, once marked by milestones of innovation, compassion, and collective growth, now seems to be overshadowed by a singular, overpowering motivator: money. This once benign tool, designed to facilitate trade and cooperation, has morphed into a relentless force, driving many to commit unspeakable acts against their fellow beings, both human and animal.

The Price of Life: When Humanity is Measured in Currency

Stories abound of individuals, blinded by greed, who would harm or even eliminate their own kin for monetary gain. If familial bonds, once considered sacrosanct, can be so easily severed, what hope do other species have? The tragic tales of stray dogs in Kerala, mercilessly killed for a bounty, are a testament to this grim reality. When the value of life is reduced to mere numbers on a currency note, the moral compass that once guided humanity seems to have lost its bearing.

The Fading Line Between Right & Wrong

Historically, humans have leaned on a sense of dharma or righteousness, a moral compass that helped distinguish right from wrong. This compass was not just a guide for individual actions but also shaped societies, cultures, and civilizations. Yet, in the modern era, this compass seems to be increasingly overshadowed by the blinding allure of wealth. The question arises: have we lost our innate sense of discretion?

The Silent Scream of the Voiceless

While humans engage in power plays, the voiceless inhabitants of our planet —the dogs, pigs, hens, cows, and countless others — bear silent testimony to our actions. If we, the self-proclaimed superior species, cannot extend empathy to our own kind, what hope do these creatures have? Their suffering, often dismissed or overlooked, is a stark reminder of the depths to which humanity can sink when driven by unchecked greed.

A Plea for Rediscovery

Yet, all is not lost. Deep within the recesses of the human psyche lies the capacity for empathy, compassion, and understanding. It's a spark that needs rekindling. The true essence of humanity is not in amassing wealth but in recognizing and valuing the intangible riches we possess: love, kindness, empathy, and a sense of shared destiny.

As the world hurtles forward, will we pause to hear the silent cries of the voiceless? Will we rediscover the true essence of humanity, or will we continue down a path of self-destruction? In the grand tapestry of existence, will the legacy of the human race be one of enlightenment or one of eternal regret?

Do you agree that money has 'transcended' even relationships and is now considered of 'utmost importance' in life?

  • A. Yes, money has become omnipotent for humans today.

  • B. No, some values still exist that money cannot buy.
