THE POWER OF ‘ONE’: HOW INDIVIDUAL CHOICES SHAPE CIVILIZATIONS

By P Mohan Chandran

Have you ever pondered the profound impact a singular decision can have on the destiny of entire nations and civilizations? Can the choices of one individual truly echo across time, influencing the course of history? Drawing parallels from ancient Indian epics and recent global events, we dive deep into the transformative power of singular choices and their lasting repercussions.

In our vast tapestry of human history and mythology, there's a recurring theme that stands out: the monumental impact of one individual's choices. While it might seem like a stretch to some, the legends from Indian Puranas and the current geopolitical landscape provide ample evidence.

Consider Ravana from the Ramayana. A formidable king, his insatiable lust for another man's wife brought about the downfall of his mighty kingdom. One man's choices led to the annihilation of a dynasty, with only Vibhishana spared due to his alliance with Lord Rama.

Then there's the Mahabharata, a tragic tale of familial feud and devastation. At its heart? Duryodhana's obstinate refusal to share power and his personal vendetta. The result? The obliteration of the Kuru dynasty, with countless lives lost in the crossfire of Kurukshetra.

Modern history, too, isn't exempt from this pattern. Mohammed Ali Jinnah's vision of a separate nation led to the violent and heart-wrenching India-Pakistan partition, claiming numerous innocent lives. General Reginald Dyer's decision in 1919 resulted in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, killing hundreds of Sikhs in cold blood. Jawaharlal Nehru's policies have been scrutinized and debated for their long-term effects on India's socio-political fabric.

One could argue that these were all significant figures with enormous influence. But that's precisely the point. The power of one person, be it born from ambition, desire, or vision, can alter the fate of countless others.

The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict provides yet another somber reflection of this age-old narrative. Critics argue that Israel's counter-attacks result in civilian casualties, questioning the ethics of such operations. But history, as detailed above, reminds us of a complex tapestry where sometimes, innocents become collateral in the larger battle of ‘dharma,’ or righteousness.

The Kurukshetra war too wasn't devoid of such complexities. Noble souls like Bhishma, Dronacharya, Barbarika (Bhima’s grandson), Vikarna, Ghatotkacha (Bhima’s son), Dhrishtadhyumna, Upa-Pandvas, Iravaan / Aravaan (Arjuna’s son) became casualties in a war that was essentially about upholding ‘dharma’ or righteousness.

So, what does this tell us about our role in the grand tapestry of existence? Can we, as individuals, ensure that our choices lead to harmony rather than chaos? How do we navigate the delicate balance between personal desires and the greater good?

These questions serve as a poignant reminder: every choice, no matter how trivial it might seem, can ripple across time and space. As history unfolds, and we face challenges both ancient and modern, let us remember the weight our choices carry, hoping to usher in an era where the power of one is wielded with wisdom and compassion.

Do you agree that ONE person can make a 'difference' and impact an entire 'civilization' positively or negatively?

  • A. Yes, our Puranas & epics have already proven it.

  • B. No, it takes two to fight a battle and many for a war.
